From humble beginnings

A rare photo of me outside, before I discovered the internet
👋 Hi there!
I'm Kate Muir, a content designer in Los Angeles, originally hailing from a historic ski town in Colorado.
In case you're wondering: no, I wasn’t a big skier. I spent most of my youth writing Spongebob fanfiction, optimizing my Roller Coaster Tycoon parks, and configuring my Xanga journal HTML so that everyone who visited was greeted by an endless loop of “SexyBack” by Justin Timberlake (yes, I was "that" early 2000's kid).
I’ve always been a tech-savvy writer with a deep curiosity about what drives people. Like many in UX content design, I found my way into the field by accident, starting as a writing tutor and copywriter for a community college outreach program from 2016–2019 while earning two psych degrees.
What does tutoring have to do with UX and content design?
A lot more than you might think!
To be a successful writing tutor, you have to have a good grasp of the information architecture of writing assignments across several disciplines, including essays, research papers, speeches, and presentations.
Much of my job didn’t so much consist of teaching my students how to write but rather providing relevant examples, diagrams, and content modeling to help them understand the overall structure of the assignment.
Simply put, I helped students answer 4 essential questions:

One of my earliest users
-
What information do I need to give my reader?
-
How much of this information do I need to give my reader?
-
How do I arrange this information effectively?
-
Why does that arrangement make sense given the context of the assignment?
To tutor writing, you also have to have a good grasp on what sort of language, terminology, and tone is appropriate given the context. For example, research papers tend to be much more formal and technical in tone than literary analysis or personal reflection essays.
In order to validate that my instruction was understood, I always ensured that my students could apply these principles without explicitly telling them what to do.
From a UX perspective, you could say that my earliest "user groups" were the students I was instructing and the educators reading and grading their work. If the student saw an improvement in their grades after coming to me for help, I considered it a win for everybody!
Fully pivoting into UX

Cerebral's design team having a blast at our 2022 Dallas retreat
In 2021, I jumped into UX writing with two volunteer gigs (one open-source, one nonprofit) and self-initiated challenges to build my portfolio.
That led to my first full-time UX writing role at the unicorn telehealth startup, Cerebral, where I spent two years building their content practice from the ground up: style guides, research, strategy, and all.
Check out my resume to see what I've been up to since!
My approach
Content design
📝
UX writing
I structure content in a way that's simple, cohesive, and helps users accomplish important tasks quickly and effectively. I keep only what is needed and remove what isn't.
🏗️
Information architecture
I leverage heuristic and hierarchical methodologies to ensure information is chunked in an intuitive way. I make sure we're saying the right things at the right time.
⚙️
Technical writing
I break down dense subject matter into digestible language that supports both user understanding and system accuracy.
Strategy and systems
📈
Content strategy
I invest in long-term strategies to accomplish business and user goals. I leverage content metrics as much as I can to inform decisions and drive meaningful change.
🗂️
Content management
I ensure content is tracked, consistently used, effectively published, and easily accessed by all teams.
🧩
Style guides
I create scalable content patterns, templates, and governance models within design systems, ensuring language stays consistent across channels.
Research and emerging tech
📊
UX research
I delve deeply into all aspects of the product and, based on these learnings, construct research plans to uncover any knowledge gaps, content pain points, and problematic terminology.
🤖
AI collaboration
I’ve trained Fortune 500 LLM models with style guides and structured language frameworks to ensure outputs are accurate, consistent, and aligned with user needs.
People and principles
🌍
Inclusivity and accessibility
I write content that is accessible, helpful, and meaningful to everyone, no matter their age, background, culture or abilities.
🤝
Advocacy and mentorship
I champion content design as a core part of UX and support newer writers along the way.
